Transitional justice in Uganda, guided by the National Transitional Justice Policy 2019, involves measures by the Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS) to address the aftermath of conflict and human rights abuses, focusing on accountability, peace, and reconciliation in affected communities, particularly in Northern, Eastern, and Rwenzori regions.

JLOS in Uganda has developed an Anti-Corruption Strategy aimed at combating corruption through prevention, detection, and punishment, addressing issues such as poor staff motivation, weak internal controls, and political interference, while promoting accountability, transparency, and public trust across its agencies.

JLOS recognizes Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as key to improving access to justice and efficiency, focusing on mediation, arbitration, and negotiation to resolve conflicts faster, reduce case backlogs, build institutional capacity, raise community awareness, and integrate ADR into the formal justice system, all while promoting peace and reconciliation.

JLOS is driving digital transformation through its 2021-2026 strategy, enhancing E-Justice with initiatives like digital platforms for the Judiciary and Prisons, electronic policing systems, and border automation, while supporting key institutions such as the Ministry of Justice and the Uganda Police Force in adopting digital strategies, integrating systems, and participating in international collaborations to improve access, efficiency, and transparency in justice delivery.

The Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS) in Uganda provides comprehensive legal aid services, including advice, representation, coaching, and referrals, to over 10,000 individuals, particularly focusing on vulnerable and marginalized groups to ensure access to justice.

JLOS is actively combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) through initiatives such as funding investigations, providing medical examinations for victims, training inmate counselors, and enhancing access to legal information, all aimed at reducing SGBV prevalence and ensuring justice for victims.

The Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS) in Uganda is enhancing immigration services through initiatives like automating border posts, expanding e-immigration services, raising public awareness, and improving visa payment systems to streamline processes and ensure better service delivery.

JLOS has implemented various crime management initiatives in Uganda, including advanced officer training, forensic expert certification, improved coordination among crime agencies, development of comprehensive investigative standards, and community policing efforts, all aimed at enhancing public safety and the effectiveness of crime-fighting agencies.

JLOS has successfully implemented community service initiatives in Uganda, issuing 14,595 orders, conducting awareness campaigns, providing social inquiry reports, offering psycho-social support, and holding reconciliatory meetings to promote rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society as an alternative to incarceration.
